The Regulations:
International law requires that all staff involved in the consignment, packing, documentation, carriage or handling of dangerous goods by air complete a fully comprehensive training course approved by the appropriate authority. In the UK this is the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) under The Air Navigation Order (Dangerous Goods Regulations) 2010 .

The legislation recognises 12 categories of staff and specifies the training they must receive.

Dangerous Goods by Air Certificate Course
Three of the above categories of staff - Category 1 (Shippers and Carriers), Category 3 (Freight Forwarders) and Category 6 (Operators and Ground Handling Agents) - require ‘full in-depth training’. This requirement is met by attending our Dangerous Goods by Air Certificate course (three days, including exam) which we offer as a public course at venues throughout the UK. The course includes an examination set by the CAA (pass mark 75%) and a certificate is issued when the pass mark is achieved. This course covers all classes of dangerous goods except radioactive materials (see Radioactive Materials course). Certificates are valid for two years. The other nine categories require shorter but specific training related to the job that the staff do.  These courses are run exclusively at your venue for your own staff and designed to meet your specific requirements.

You must attend a 3-day initial course if you have never held a Dangerous Goods by Air certificate before.

Your certificate must then be revalidated at intervals of no longer than two years by completing a Revalidation course. If you deal with radioactive materials as well as other dangerous goods, you will need to attend a 2-day Radioactive Materials Course in addition to the basic Dangerous Goods by Air Certificate course. This qualification must also be revalidated every two years.

TrainingTeam's Dangerous Goods by Air courses are fully approved by the CAA for Shippers and Packers, Freight Agents, Handling Agents and Airlines. Our instructors hold the required approvals from the CAA covering subject knowledge, course preparation and presentation skills. Dangerous Goods by Air courses are based on the use of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. This course is often referred to internationally as the 'IATA' course although, in the UK, the approval authority is the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Dangerous Goods by Air Revalidation Course
Certificates may be re-validated by attending a Dangerous Goods by Air Re-validation course (two days, including exam).

Please note that, because the revalidation course starts with the assumption that students have a good working knowledge of the Regulations, TrainingTeam recommends that candidates who are NOT frequent and confident users of the Regulations consider revalidating their qualification by attending a further three-day certificate course.

In order to maintain continuity of your qualification, you should revalidate prior to expiry of your old certificate. If you complete revalidation training within the 3 month period BEFORE your certificate expires, your new certificate will be dated from the expiry date of the old.

Dangerous Goods (Radioactive Materials) by Air Courses
If you are involved only with radioactive materials you need only attend the Radioactive Materials by Air course (two days, including exam). When you pass the course test, your certificate will show that it is for radioactive materials only. The certificate is valid for two years and can be revalidated by attending another Radioactive Materials by Air course. If you are involved with radioactive materials in addition to other classes of dangerous goods (and you do not already hold a Dangerous Goods by Air Certificate) you must attend both the Dangerous Goods by Air Certificate course and the Radioactive Materials by Air course (i.e. the full five days) and pass both tests. When you revalidate, you must attend both a Dangerous Goods by Air Revalidation course and a Radioactive Materials course.

In order to maintain continuity of your qualification, you should revalidate prior to expiry of your old certificate. If you complete revalidation training within the 3 month period BEFORE your certificate expires, your new certificate will be dated from the expiry date of the old.

49CFR Dangerous Goods
Many companies are involved in the transport of dangerous goods with the USA , where the relevant legislation is 49 CFR – Code of Federal Regulations for Transportation. There are significant differences between 49 CFR and other international regulations such as IATA and IMDG.

Any exporters, importers, shipping lines, airlines, forwarders or couriers shipping to or through the USA have to comply with 49 CFR. Failure to comply with these regulations can lead to delays in transport and potentially massive fines. At the end of the course, delegates will:

  • Have a basic understanding of the Regulations
  • Be able to locate information within 49 CFR and be aware of sources of additional assistance for interpreting the information
  • Be able to produce or market dangerous goods to the United States with an understanding of other workplace safety regulations which may have an impact on their operations.
