Legislation
If you are involved in the shipment of dangerous goods by road, it is mandatory that members of your staff receive training
"… in the requirements governing the carriage of such goods appropriate to their responsibilities and duties" (ADR Chapter 1.3, p1.3.1). In addition, DfT and HSE requirements call for all staff involved in the packing, documentation, handling, loading, unloading or shipment of dangerous goods to have an understanding of certain UK Regulations that remain in force.

Who needs to be trained?
Staff from road vehicle operators, shippers, freight agents, cargo handling agents and airlines who:

  • manufacture, consign, classify, pack, mark, or label dangerous goods which will be shipped by road
  • prepare transport documents
  • mark/placard or are otherwise responsible for the provision of road transport vehicles, bulk packaging, or freight containers
  • are directly involved in the transport of dangerous goods by road as determined by the competent authority

Dangerous Goods by Road (full 3 day) course
This course will enable you to interpret the regulations regarding the transport of Dangerous Goods by Road, including Carriage of Dangerous Goods (Classification, Packaging and Labeling) Regulations, Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road Regulations, Approved Requirements, Approved Carriage List, European Road Regulations (ADR). The course covers Legislation, Classification, Packing requirements, Labeling and Plackarding, Marks and Signs, Documentation, Emergency Information, Limited Quantities.
A Certificate of Competence will be issued to those who pass the end of course examination.

Dangerous Goods Refresher Training
ADR Chapter 1.3, (1.3.2.4) also required that 'the training shall be periodically supplemented with refresher training to take account of charges in regulations'. Holders of a valid DG by Road certificate may attend the one day 'top-up' course to meet this requirement - provided that a copy of the certificate is produced at the time of booking. We recommend that candidates attend revalidation training at 2 year intervals.

Increasingly, our clients are finding that it is necessary to be dangerous goods qualified in the three principle modes of transport - air, road and sea.  To obtain these qualifications, it has, until now, been necessary to attend each full initial course. However, because of the considerable amount of common ground now applying to these courses (Air, Road, Sea), we have designed two one day top-up days (one for road and one for sea) to follow a scheduled DG by Air course. This results in a useful reduction in cost and, perhaps more importantly for many clients, a reduction in the time a student is away from the workplace as it saves three days in the classroom.  On passing the end-of-course exam a separate DG by Road certificate will be issued.  Normal revalidation rules will apply to each certificate.

Notes:
Students requiring a DG by Road Certificate only must still attend the full three day DG by Road course.
